The Gullies are a fascinating phenomenon caused by the erosion of the atmospheric agents. They have been compared by many writers to Dante's bolge. Also called "Scremoni", they are ravines formed by Pliocene clay, whose depth reaches 300 meters and more. Today these natural monuments are protected by Calanchi di Atri Regional Nature Reserve, established with regional law no. 58 of 20th April 1995.
The protected area covers about 380 ha and is characterized by a varied habitat including gullies, ditches, small lakes, woodland formations, cultivated fields, and areas interested by reforestation activities. Also the wildlife is characterized by several animal species like buzzards, hawks, hedgehogs, hares, weasels, and many others. The porcupine, chosen as the symbol of the Nature Reserve, is an exclusive and shy animal living in the area for over 25 years and protected thanks to the creation of this wildlife area.
