On the 17th of November 2015, in Paris, the 38th Plenary Session of the UNESCO General Conference recognized the Global Network of Geoparks as UNESCO's official program and established the new category called UNESCO Global Geoparks. At the same time, all the 120 existing Geoparks - situated in 33 Countries all over the world and in 4 continents - obtained the recognition as UNESCO Global Geoparks.
Ten UNESCO Global Geoparks have been identified also in Italy:
Such an important result represents a fundamental boost for the right management, conservation and the enhancement of the Geodiversity in our Country since it is a UNESCO World Heritage.
Italian Geoparks would really like to thank both the Italian National Commission for UNESCO and the Permanent Delegation of Italy to UNESCO in Paris that, together with the Commissions and Representatives of other nations, in the last years have granted a precious and firm support to obtain this prestigious acknowledgment.
