In the area of Lodi, since the beginning of the last century, an evolution towards "extensive" breeding activities, particularly careful to the well-being of the animal, has been gaining ground. Similar procedures, characterized by the particular attention paid to the well-being of the animals, are technically called "cow-calf line". Besides the attention dedicated to the hygienic and sanitary prophylaxis and all the prescriptions regarding the diet, banning food of animal origin or containing animal fats, according to this breeding system the calves must remain with their mum, nursing and feeding them at least up to six years of age. During this period, they have at disposal open spaces and also a small area exclusively dedicate to them, where not even their mother is allowed and where they can get used to the fodder diet awaiting them after the nursing. In this way, their growth will be more natural and balanced, with tangible benefits not only on their general sanitary conditions, but also on the meat quality.
