Annual Report Beigua Regional Nature Park & Geopark

work to improve the geological heritage conservation activities

(Arenzano, 28 Feb 11) During 2010 the Beigua Regional Nature Park (European and UNESCO Global Geopark) continued his work to improve the geological heritage conservation activities within the frame of the wider and more complex strategy of conservation of the natural and cultural-historical heritage the protected area has. New projects and opportunities were developed.
Highlights of the year included:

1. Organization of several initiatives to improve the Geopark visibility along the coastal area. Educational programmes, guided visits, public workshops and scientific presentations have been given to enhance the geological and geomorphological heritage in the best known area of Beigua Geopark in terms of touristic attendance. The Beigua Geopark staff also collaborated with the University of Genova - DIPTERIS to survey and publish the new geomorphological map of the coastal area of the Geopark.

2. Several educational programmes had been adopted by local schools to raise pupils awareness about the geological heritage in Beigua Geopark. In 2010 the educational activities involved more than 3.200 students through workshops at school, field trips and exhibition visits. Four different final events had been presented to local community during the European Geoparks Week 2010.

3. Launch of the new project about the enhancement of the geo-archeological sites in Beigua Geoparks. It involves an inventory of rupestrian inscriptions in the Beigua Geopark area and interpretation and educational activities for adults and children to increase public awareness about the geo-archeological heritage in the Beigua area.

4. The Beigua Geopark has been given the task of inventorying the Geosites of Liguria Region according to a call of tenders by the Regional Administration. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate the competence of the Beigua Geopark staff on geological heritage assessment.
