Situated between river Po, river Reno, and the Adriatic Sea, Valli di Comacchio are a very important wetland from an ecological point of view, but also a unique example of integration between natural environment and human activities. As a matter of fact, since very ancient times, fishing and the extensive farming of several important fish species have been practiced in the area: eel, see bass, lagoon shrimp. In particular, the eel – snake-shaped fish reproducing in the Sargasso Sea but living its vital cycle (7-10 years) in inner waters, was very important for the local economy.
