Cahier Ecomuseo n. 08. Lä fabriccä dlä marlücchä - La fabbrica del merluzzo di Salbertrand

Supplementary work and cod processing in Salbertrand

An eagerly awaited "cahier" dedicated to a particular and without a doubt not very common activity in the Provençal Alpine Valleys: the drying and processing of the cod caught in the Atlantic Ocean. This exclusive kind of record is contended with other famous activities like anchovy processing in Val Maira; however, the presence in upper Dora Valley of three factories (in Oulx, Chiomonte, and Salbertrand) and an infrastructure like Frejus international railway line cannot be found elsewhere. The presence of the railway line, the fortifications, the birth of hydroelectric plants, the quarries, the forest nursery, and the deforestation activities gave local families the opportunity to integrate the scarce incomes coming from agriculture and breeding activities with other incomes enabling the local economy to go beyond the autarchic level.
