The great works for the realization of the canals near the river Mincio - which started during the Roman age, was continued by Pitentino and made effective by the Gonzagas - aimed at giving back to agriculture and to urban settlement a surface as wide as possible, avoiding the seasonal floods and reclaiming the unhealthy areas.
