Signed the 2025 operational plan between the Carabinieri Parks Command and Aspromonte National Park: a renewed commitment to environmental protection and territorial security

(Santo Stefano Aspromonte, 07 Feb 25) In recent days, an important Operational Plan was officially signed between the Carabinieri Parks Command and the Aspromonte National Park Authority. This agreement represents a joint effort to enhance the protection of this extraordinary natural area and safeguard both its environmental and cultural heritage. Nestled in the heart of Calabria, the park spans across 37 municipalities within the metropolitan area of Reggio Calabria, offering breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity.

The agreement was formally signed by Sabrina Scalera, Acting Director of the Aspromonte National Park Authority, and Lieutenant Colonel Pietro Felice Marchetta, Commander of the Carabinieri Unit for Aspromonte National Park, in the presence of Renato Carullo, the park's Extraordinary Commissioner. The Operational Plan outlines a series of monitoring, surveillance, and intervention activities aimed at combating illegal activities, preventing wildfires, and addressing environmental threats that could disrupt the park's delicate ecological balance.

"The 2025 Operational Plan," explained Commander Marchetta, "serves as a crucial tool of cooperation between the Carabinieri Parks Unit and the National Park Authority, defining strategic objectives and allocating financial resources to support law enforcement efforts in the park. Our operations are focused on preventing and prosecuting environmental crimes, particularly tackling illegal construction, wildfires, and threats to wildlife and biodiversity, in line with the principles established by our Constitution."

This strategic alliance for the protection of Aspromonte is not only about law enforcement - it also relies on fostering a deep appreciation for the mountains and nature among residents and visitors alike.

The Operational Plan focuses on several key priorities, including:

  • Wildfire Prevention: Surveillance efforts and rapid intervention plans will help reduce the risk of forest fires, which pose a serious threat, particularly during the summer months.
  • Protection of Wildlife and Habitats: The park is home to a wide range of protected species, some of which are endangered. Conservation efforts will include species monitoring and habitat preservation.
  • Combatting Environmental Crimes: A key objective is to crack down on poaching, illegal wildlife trafficking, unauthorized construction, and other environmental violations.
  • Environmental Awareness and Education: The plan includes initiatives aimed at educating the public and visitors, encouraging responsible behavior to preserve the park's natural beauty.

By signing this Operational Plan, the Carabinieri Parks Command and Aspromonte National Park Authority reaffirm their long-standing cooperation. However, this is just the beginning-true conservation requires continuous action and the involvement of multiple organizations and institutions to ensure that this unspoiled natural sanctuary remains protected.

"Respect for nature and environmental legality," concluded Commander Marchetta, "are the most valuable investments being pursued by the Park Authority and the Carabinieri Forest Unit. Only through sustainable management and development of the Aspromonte territory can we guarantee its benefits for both local communities and future generations."

Beyond its ecological importance, Aspromonte National Park is a treasure trove of cultural and tourism opportunities. Its protection and promotion require ongoing commitment and cooperation, as demonstrated by the signing of this new Operational Plan.
