LIPU sets up a scholarship in memory of Davide Barcellone
The Davide Barcellone post-graduation scholarship is open to graduates in Biology, Nature and Environment Studies, Environmental Studies.
(Riomaggiore, 05 Mar 18) In remembrance of Davide Barcellone, who was for years in charge of the Arcola Oasis in the Montemarcello-Magra-Vara Regional Park (La Spezia), LIPU has set up a post-graduation scholarship on the monitoring of birds nesting in the Park, and especially in the Arcola Oasis. This area, which is a Site of Community Importance (SIC IT1343502 Parco della Magra – Vara) hosts habitats and species connected with river environments and with wetlands in general, and features oxbow lakes, groves of reeds, and thick riparian woodlands.
In this natural area, which is nowadays unique in Liguria and importantly shows how the Magra Valley marsh landscape once looked like, many bird species nest, such as penduline tits, blackcaps, nightingales, blackbirds and great tits. The study will focus on nesting species, mapping them during the 2018 breeding season, and will enable scholars to estimate bird populations in the Arcola Oasis, analyse their composition and understand the relative importance of the various species. Davide Barcellone worked in this area for many years as responsible of the LIPU Oasis, monitoring and taking care of it, welcoming and offering his great communication skills and his knowledge on nature and agriculture.
"A year after the passing of Davide" says LIPU President Fulvio Mamone Capria "the memory of this generous, helpful, life-loving young man hasn't faded in the slightest. There are many ways to remember someone. We have chosen to dedicate him the Arcola Visitor Centre and to set up this post-graduation scholarship in his name, as it is connected with three things that Davide very much loved: wild birds, knowledge, and the oasis".
