It is produced by bees starting from the resinous secretions present on the buds of some trees (Poplar, Oak, Alder, Fir, Elm, Horse Chestnut, Pine, Birch), to which bees add their own salivary and enzymatic secretions. For its antibacterial action, propolis is used by bees as a coating for the internal walls of the hive.
