The town of Amatrice, built on the rocky spur dominating the confluence between River Tronto and Torrent Castellano, preserves a historical town center surrounded by walls with five entrances and a plan with a regular mesh. Beautiful palaces of the 16th, 17th, and 18th century and more ancient buildings characterize its streets: among them, the slim Municipal Tower and the sober bell towers of the Churches of St Augustine and Saint Emygdius or of Madonna Lauretana. Interesting the Roman-Gothic St Francis church (14th century), enriched with 14th and 15th century frescoes, and St Augustine Church (15th century) with frescoes from Crivelli's school.
