Beura-Cardezza
In the Ossola heart
The municipality boasts a very ancient history, linked to the Visconti domination. As this evidence, inside the town of Beura, it is still possible to admire the remains of numerous Guard towers, dating back to the medieval period. In addition to these, in the oldest central core of the town, stands the Castello Visconteo, an example of Lombard architecture of the 1400s. Also relevant are the two distinct parish churches: that of Beura, dating back to the fifteenth century, was built on the ruins of a previous church, while that of Cardezza (1515-1833), dedicated to Sant'Antonio Abate, preserves valuable frescoes by the painter Vigezzino Lorenzo Peretti.
Finally, there is the presence of a Cloister and a Historic Cemetery in the Cardezza district, as well as Underground Tunnels and Roman remains (II century) in the Beura area. The town, formerly called, "Bevola", owes its name to "beola", a typical Ossal rock, particularly suitable for being cut into slabs and used for paving and roofing. Beola is therefore an essential element for the economy of the area: the quarries for the extraction of the Beura rock date back to about 500 years ago.
