Val Grande and Valsesia announce their candidacy for Unesco Geopark

(Vogogna, 19 Dec 12) The National Park Val Grande and the Association "Supervulcano Valsesia ONLUS" have started the procedure for the recognition of the "Sesia-Val Grande Geopark" in the European and Global Geopark Network (EGN and GGN) under the aegis of the Unesco.
The united candidacy of a territory extending from the Val Grande to the Valsesia and the Valsessera, by way of the Val Strona and comprising both the Cannobina and the central Ossola valley, is the result of a combined effort of the Val Grande National Park and the Association "Supervulcano Valsesia ONLUS". On the base of a specific indication of the EGN scientific committee, the above mentioned organizations have equalized their original proposals within a homogeneous field of candidacy of a territory with extraordinary geological, geostructural, geomorphological, mining and landscape characteristics which are internationally recognized and have been subject of studies and researches since a long time, both for universities and scholars all over the world.
Both realities have been indeed working for a long time for the recognition as geoparks of the territories of Valsesia, Valsessera, Prealpi Biellesi, Valle Strona and Alte colline Novaresi situated in the area occupied by the fossil supervolcano, and for the recognition of the several peculiarities and geological emergencies of Val Grande National Park's territory and its surrounding areas.
