Calvario - Anzuno - Calvario

Route no. 1

  • Trail Conditions: On foot
  • Interest: Religion, Hystory
  • Duration: 3.5/4

After leaving from the last car park on the S. Quirico-Calvario road, follow a comfortable paved mule track which, after crossing the asphalt road where a little chapel with a small Madonna and flowers lies, enters the woodland up to a little grass plain. Here, slightly divert towards the right, follow the carriage road (you will see the chapel "of Maris") up to the country hamlet Gruppi, where the oratory of S. Defendente is situated. Follow the road going through the country hamlet leaving on the left country buildings and a stone fountain-drinking trough; then the trail follows among pubescent oaks and chestnut tree woodlands up to the oratory dedicated to S.Antonio; you will get to Anzuno, where you can visit an old press and an oven used to bake bread. Going ahead, after leaving the car park and going beyond some old mountain huts, the trail leads you on the banks of rio d'Anzuno, where you can visit old mills and caves. At this point, by following the indications, you can go ahead towards Tappia, a country hamlet of the Municipality of Villadossola, going beyond the chapel of the Oro and along the cemetery in disuse, up to the church dedicated to S.Zeno. Here you will enjoy a great view of the underlying valley. By going back along the same itinerary, you will reach again the oratory of Anzuno, where you can take the lower trail leading to the church of Crosiggia and from this on an asphalt road you arrive at the departure point (be careful: when the mule track meets the non-asphalt carriageway, the trail follows on small iron stairs).
