The idea of a square in the upper area of Sacro Monte was already present in the project by Galeazzo Alessi (1565-1569 approximately). In the plateau at the summit of the mountain, he wanted to reproduce a sort of "ideal town", the town of Jerusalem, with a refined urban plan.
