Another characteristic local vine is Grignolino, which expresses at its best in the designation "del Monferrato Casalese". Diffucult and "anti-modern" (in the weakest years it reaches a complete ripening with difficulty), it remains one of the most characteristic vines of the area and, if well-processed, gives character wines: with a not very bright ruby color tending sometimes to an orange color, with strong pepper and red berry notes, and strongly tannic.
