The Reserve protects a large cypress-tree wood situated among the hills of Chianti Senese, halfway between Castellina in Chianti and Poggibonsi. The cypress-tree, imported in Tuscany in ancient times, probably by the Etruscan population, forms in the Reserve a real wood whose origins date back to a dozen of centuries ago. Thanks to particular conditions, this cypress-tree wood has naturalized, renewing spontaneously up to present times and perfectly integrating to the preexisting vegetation. Besides the great landscape value offered by the cypress-tree, a symbol of many Tuscan sceneries, S. Agnese cypress-tree wood can be considered a historical monument, since it has been used since ancient times for the production of precious timber.
